Minutes of the Freedom OPRC Meeting held on July 18, 2008 @ 7PM
Hosted at Shiela & Tod Haviland’s residence

There were eight of us in attendance, Kelly Smith & Mom, Judy Willey, Shiela Haviland, Bonnie Pickle, Robin Goebel, Pam ? and Stephanie Baird.

We presently have 12 members. Newest member is Marietta Van Natta …welcome aboard Mary!!! We are hoping that our club will grow in the future so tell all your friends how much fun we have getting together and how much of a relaxed atmosphere it is. If you have new email addresses, phone numbers, etc., please email Judy Willey & Kelly Smith and let us know your new information. Kelly Smith will be taking over the tasking of updating our membership list.

Of course food was first on the agenda after a visit to Shiela’s beautiful horses; we enjoyed Shiela’s German goulash with dumplings and a salad. We chatted about our latest adventures and enjoyed each other’s company while munching out. Ok so we chatted as we waited for the dumplings to cook!!!! Sorry Shiela had to give you a hard time….My first German dish and it was delicious!!

Our first item of discussion was the OPRC Rally scheduled for Oct.5th 2008. We have decided to join with FF club to do the rally. The cost for the Rally is 15.00 a day if I’m not mistaken. Update: There is a meeting on Sunday, 17 August at 11:00 AM for those assisting with the rally to check out lucky cricket farm, host of the Rally. Afterwards, those that want to join Shiela are welcome to join her for lunch at a restaurant.

Use this link for directions. http://www.luckycricketfarm.com/directions.htm

Please RSVP to Shiela so she’ll know who to expect. her cell is 240-346-5759 There have been a lot of emails coming in discussing the Rally committees, if you are interested and have not signed up yet just let me know and I’ll give you the contact info.

We also discussed getting together and having some practice sessions for the Rally. We did originally set one up for Sept.17 but will now need to reschedule that one ASAP. Judy will ask Mr.Willey if we can maybe use his ring or we could also travel to Oakridge and use the ring there. We’ll hopefully have more info for you at the next meeting.

We also talked a little about seeing if any of us would be interested in attending one of Jimmie McDonough’s cow cutting clinics this fall. Some of us really enjoyed our little clinic that Kelly, Shiela & Robin held at Oakridge a few weeks ago. Lots of great tips shown on lunging, one reign stops, getting stubborn horses to do as you ask!!! Update: Shiela is working to set up a clinic with him. More info to follow:

Notes for new and prospective members:

1. Joining: Bring a completed membership form (from the national OPRC website) plus dues/insurance of $30 to any meeting. If your first meeting is a mounted meeting, you MUST let us know in advance, since we will have to rate you before you ride. You may also mail the form and dues to: Robin Goebel, PO Box 937, Solomons, MD 20688. Checks are made out to Freedom OPRC.

2. Medical: For a mounted meeting, all members must wear an armband with the medical form completed; the medical form is also available on the OPRC website. Judy has 5 armbands left if you need one. Armbands can be found at Target.

3. Meetings: We shoot for two meetings per month. One is unmounted, typically on the third Friday of each month. The other will be a mounted meeting, either for trail riding or for a mini clinic or any other purpose we set up.

4. Rating levels: The idea of OPRC is to continue the learning of its members as their riding needs change or their horse's skill levels change. The rating tests and study sheets are available on the national website. Every member must be rated at D1 in order to participate in mounted meetings.
